Roadside Assistance Helsinki: Why Knowing Your Car’s Limits Saves You Trouble (and Money)
Running a 24/7 roadside assistance and towing service here in Uusimaa, I’ve seen just about everything. Since my family started Aaron Hinaus back in 2009 – and now as a second-generation owner – I’ve learned a lot about cars and, more importantly, about people and their cars. One thing that always stands out to me is how often a small problem can turn into a really big, expensive one, simply because folks don’t have all the information about their vehicle. It’s not their fault, of course; modern cars are complex!
We’re here to help, no matter what, across Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo, Kauniainen, Kerava, and Sipoo. But I wanted to share some of my experience, especially about those moments when your car breaks down, and what you can do to protect it from further damage. Trust me, a little bit of knowledge goes a long way in saving your engine, your gearbox, and your wallet.
The Hidden Dangers of a “Simple” Tow
This is probably the most common scenario where I see preventable damage. Your car breaks down, you’re stranded, and you just want it off the road. Understandable! But if you don’t know the specifics of your car – like if it’s front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, or if it has an automatic or manual transmission – trying to tow it incorrectly can cause severe damage to the engine or gearbox.
I’ve arrived at scenes where someone has tried to pull a car with a rope, or even used an unsuitable vehicle to tow another, only to find that the transmission is now completely ruined. For instance, towing an all-wheel-drive car with only two wheels on the ground can seriously damage the drivetrain. Similarly, many automatic transmissions aren’t designed to be towed with the drive wheels on the ground for long distances. They need to be lifted completely, or at least have the drive wheels off the ground.
That’s why calling a professional for a tow truck Espoo or anywhere in Uusimaa is so important. We know what questions to ask, and we have the right equipment – flatbed trucks, wheel-lift systems – to ensure your vehicle is transported safely and correctly. For a local tow up to 30 km, we charge 120 EUR (incl. VAT). That’s a small price compared to a new gearbox!
Beyond Towing: Common Roadside Headaches
It’s not always about towing. We provide a full range of roadside assistance services, and often, the same principle applies: knowing a little bit can save you a lot of grief.
Flat Tyres: More Than Just a Puncture
A flat tyre is annoying, but it’s usually not a catastrophe. However, trying to drive on a completely flat tyre, even for a short distance, can destroy the wheel rim, brake components, and even suspension parts. If you have a spare, great, but do you know how to change it safely? Do you have the right tools? Sometimes, the wheel nuts are so tight you can’t get them off.
Our mobile tyre service is designed for this. We come to you, anywhere in our service area, and can change your tyre for 89 EUR (incl. VAT). It’s quick, safe, and prevents further damage to your car or injury to yourself.
The Jump Start Dilemma
Dead battery? It happens. But connecting jumper cables incorrectly can cause electrical surges that damage your car’s sensitive electronics, like the engine control unit (ECU). Always check your car’s manual for the correct procedure, or better yet, call us. Our jump start service costs 59 EUR (incl. VAT), and our crews know exactly how to get your car started safely without frying any circuits. It’s a quick fix that avoids a much bigger problem.
Locked Out? Don’t Force It
Keys locked inside the car? It’s frustrating, especially if you’re in a hurry in car lockout Vantaa. Your first thought might be to try and force a window or pry open a door. Please don’t! You’ll likely cause more damage to the door frame, window, or paintwork, which is far more expensive to repair than calling us. Our lockout assistance service is 79 EUR (incl. VAT), and we have the right tools to get your door open without a scratch.
Running on Empty
It’s easy to misjudge fuel levels, especially on a long drive. Running out of fuel can cause problems beyond just being stranded. Modern diesel engines, in particular, can be difficult to restart after running completely dry, sometimes requiring special priming procedures. Our fuel delivery service costs 49 EUR (incl. VAT), plus the cost of the fuel itself. We’ll bring you enough to get to the nearest petrol station, saving you a walk and potential engine headaches.
